The Lufthansa Group has ordered 80 new aircraft as part of its fleet modernization strategy, with additional purchasing options.

The estimated list price for the orders amounts to $9 billion, with deliveries scheduled between 2026 and 2032, the Group said in a statement.

The airlines’ Supervisory Board sanctioned the following purchases: 40 Airbus A220-300s, accompanied by 20 additional purchasing options; 40 Boeing 737-8 MAX, along with 60 purchasing options; and securing purchasing options for an extra 40 aircraft from the Airbus A320 family.

The capital expenditure impact for 2023 and 2024 is projected to be insubstantial, the Group said in a statement.

The firm, anticipating a net investment of between EUR 2.5 billion and EUR 3 billion for 2023, foresees a comparable level of capital expenditure in 2024.

Dr. Detlef Kayser, a member of the executive board of fleet and technology, emphasized the strategic importance of this aircraft order and cited it as the “largest fleet modernization effort in the company’s history.”

Kayser highlighted the commitment to long-term cost efficiency and emissions reduction, underlining the decision’s importance. “This increases our order list of around 200 aircraft to 280 – plus an additional 120 purchasing options for further state-of-the-art short- and medium-haul aircraft. We are pleased that both Airbus and Boeing were able to convince us on all commercial and technological aspects,” he added.

Kayser noted that the inclusion of the Boeing 737-8 MAX supports the Lufthansa Group’s commitment to flexibility in procuring short- and medium-haul aircraft in the future.

“The new ultra-modern aircraft offer our guests additional comfort. They are also quieter, more economical, more efficient, and emit up to 30% less CO2 than their predecessor models,” he said.
