Thailand adds 4 more products to GI list

Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce’s Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) has added four more items to the nation’s list of products with Geographical Indications (GI), a move designed to boost the value and sales of the goods.

Commerce Minister Aphiradee Tantraporn said recently that in late December 2016, the DIP announced the registration of four new items to its GI list. The four are lanzones from Narathiwat, durian from Prachinburi, pineapple from Ratchaburi, and dried longan from Lamphun.

The additions bring Thailand’s GI list to 75 products representing 53 provinces. Another 15 goods are currently pending approval for addition, according to a news report by the National News Bureau of Thailand.

The department noted that there are provinces yet to submit any products for consideration and that it is working to have items from all 77 provinces of the country included in its list to boost the income of local producers.

Products that have GI status, which indicates that a particular item of a special quality or higher standard can only be found in a particular origin, enjoy higher value on the market and a better image as their quality is guaranteed.
