The Tacloban Airport is expected to be completed by March 2024 after some construction delays.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) are accelerating the Tacloban Airport Development Project, with CAAP director general Manuel Antonio Tamayo attributing the delay to revisions in the passenger terminal building’s (PTB) roofing, arch finishes and access ramp plans, which were only approved on September 19.

As of September 25, the PTB is 57.13% complete, according to a DOTr statement.

Tamayo said the transport agency recently awarded a contract for the asphalt overlay and correction of the runway strip width using concrete sheet piles on September 21.

The project is expected to commence in December, with completion expected exactly one year later.

As per the 2024 National Expenditure Program, an additional P500 million in funding for the ongoing strip width correction will be put out for bidding in the fourth quarter of 2023 or once the 2024 General Appropriations Act is approved.

To further extend the runway from 2.1 kilometers to 2.5 km to accommodate larger aircraft like the Airbus A330, an additional budget of ₱238 million under the 2023 budget has been allocated to the city government of Tacloban for the acquisition of an additional 8 hectares of land.

Transport Undersecretary for Aviation and Airports, Roberto Lim, expects the acquisition process to conclude by December 2024.

The plan for the PTB at the airport is currently pending approval, with bids set to be submitted and opened on October 10. The project is slated for a 720-calendar day duration, inclusive of specifications and drawings. Construction is expected to commence in December 2023, with completion anticipated in December 2025.
