  • Port of New York and New Jersey keeps the title as the United States’ busiest container port for the fourth month running
  • The port reported a throughput of 723,069 TEUs in November 2022, up 20.6% from November 2019
  • The US East Coast gateway rose to the top as traders shifted their imports from erstwhile No.1 Port of Los Angeles last summer due to congestion causing delays and fear of a likely port workers strike over contract dispute

The Port of New York and New Jersey held onto the title as the top US gateway in November 2022 for a fourth consecutive month with 20.6% volume growth from November 2019 levels, as rival Port of Los Angeles’ throughput shrank by about the same rate, foiling its attempt to regain its lost position.

The Port Authority announced that the New York port moved 723,069 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in November, an increase of 20.6% compared with November 2019.

Last month’s cargo activity at the seaport was 8.6% lower than the October level as the seasonal peak of activity relating to the Christmas and New Year holidays ended.

The New York port handled 792,548 TEUs in October, further bolstering its hold on the title as the top US port that it first took from Los Angeles port in August.

In recent months, US East Coast ports have reported elevated container volumes as trade was diverted from the West Coast, where shippers had been hindered by labor disputes and logistics bottlenecks.

That shift took away cargo from the Los Angeles gateway, prompting its executive director Gene Seroka to launch a personal campaign to attract containers back to the port, which has since seen its congestion problem ease.

The Port of New York and New Jersey said it moved 723,069 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in November 2022, an increase of 20.6% from November 2019.

For the same month this year, Los Angeles Port’s cargo volume remained soft with the gateway handling 639,344 TEUs, a 21% year-on-year dive as shippers continued to shift imports away from the West Coast and shipping demand weakened.

The November volume slide added to Seroka’s concern amid the prospect of a further decline in the months ahead after the latest CNBC Supply Chain Heat Map data showed a 40% dive in US manufacturing orders in China.
