Myanmar new flagA general cargo port and a container loading dock will be added to the port at the Thilawa Special Economic Zone on the outskirts of Yangon in Myanmar.

The Myanma Port Authority said it is inviting eight construction tenders for the expansion project that is scheduled to begin this year.

The Ministry of Transport will use a US$205-million loan from Japan’s Official Development Assistance to improve on the existing port.

“We are looking for qualified international construction companies to build and quality-test purchasing equipments. In total, eight companies will be chosen,” said an official from Myanma Port Authority.

The ministry is currently hiring expert advisers, inviting tenders, and preparing to construct buildings behind the port.

Meanwhile, Myanmar Airways intends to beef up its fleet with six new planes and to open an aircraft maintenance center at Yangon International Airport.

The state-owned airline will purchase six 72-600 planes planes from ATR Company of France and is in talks with the company to build a domestic repair service so local airline companies will not have to go to Thailand, Malaysia, or Singapore where ATR Company has assembly plants so as to get their airplanes fixed.
