Iloilo City storage yields P4.5M in used clothing

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) seized 478 bales of ukay-ukay (used clothing) estimated at P4.5 million in Jaro, Iloilo City on August 4.

A composite team spearheaded by BOC-Iloilo Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service Field Station, Enforcement and Security Service-Customs Police Division, Customs Border Protection-District VI, and Jaro barangay officials conducted an inspection of the storage facility where the bales and sacks of ukay-ukay were found.

A warrant of seizure and detention has been issued against the apprehended items for violation of Section 118 (Prohibited Importation and Exportation) of Republic Act No. 10863, or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act, and RA 4653, which prohibits the importation of used clothing and rags in commercial quantity to safeguard the health of the people and maintain the dignity of the nation.

Of the 557 seizures of smuggled goods amounting to a total of P10.169 billion conducted in the first semester of 2021, used clothing accounted for 20 of the seizures,with a total value of P44.127 million.
