Cathay Pacific transported 20.7% more cargo to 114,790 tons in January 2024 from the same month last year, the airline said in a statement.

Cargo revenue ton kilometers rose 11.4% despite a slight decrease in the cargo load factor to 58.6%. Available cargo ton kilometers increased by 18.3% year-on-year.

Compared to December 2023, tonnage in January 2024 decreased by 11% resulting from a typical dip in air cargo demand after the peak year-end period, according to chief customer and commercial officer Lavinia Lau.

From the second week of January onward, however, the airline noted a surge in tonnage across their global network, mainly perishable shipments, especially from the Southwest Pacific to Asia, which showcased an uptick.

The Cathay Group, encompassing Cathay Pacific and HK Express, carried 1,717,200 passengers, a 66.4% increase compared to January 2023.

Revenue passenger kilometers surged by 56.7% year-on-year, while the passenger load factor slightly decreased to 82.8%. Available seat kilometers rose by 64.2% year-on-year.
Lau highlighted the post-Christmas decline in leisure demand but emphasized the positive performance in business travel, notably on Chinese Mainland routes. The Philippines route stood out with a load factor of close to 90%.

Looking ahead, Cathay Pacific anticipates sustained demand after the Lunar New Year period, with an increased focus on business travel, particularly on long-haul routes, according to Lau.
