Ocean Network Express (ONE) is enhancing its reefer service with telematic gear to be installed on its refrigerated box fleet to give clients a comprehensive visibility of their cargo, marking a significant milestone in its digitalization strategy.

The Singapore-headquartered carrier, a member of the global ocean carrier consortium THE Alliance, said in a June 15 statement it recognizes the growing significance of technology and the pivotal role it will play in the refrigerated commodity market.

As refrigerated commodities are sensitive, ONE said it aims to deliver to customers a comprehensive visibility of their cargo and optimized operational decision-making using telematic devices.

The company said insights would enhance its existing suite of reefer solutions and ensure cargo arrives in optimal condition.

“The installation of telematic devices on our reefer box fleet is a testament to our unwavering dedication to enhancing customer experience while driving digital transformation in the containerized reefer trade,” said Kenichi Michida, senior vice president for strategic yield management at ONE.

“We believe technology-enabled containers are the future of shipping, and we are excited to embark on this next step in our digital transformation journey using cutting-edge solutions to benefit our customers and industry.”

ONE said that as a leading container carrier for refrigerated commodities, it is constantly seeking new solutions to enhance customer experience. This new investment enhancing its reefer service with telematic gear demonstrates ONE’s strong commitment to the containerized reefer trade, the company said.

ONE said the key benefits of installing telematic devices on its reefer box fleet include:

  •  Enhanced visibility: Telematic devices will provide ONE with active monitoring data about temperature, humidity, and other conditions inside reefer containers. With this information, ONE can better track the cargo’s condition and identify any potential problems as soon as they arise.
  •  Proactive decision-making: With active monitoring data, ONE will be able to make more proactive decisions on cargo handling.
  •  Improved customer service: ONE can provide its customers with more detailed information about the condition of their cargo. Using this information will help customers make better supply chain decisions.

“Telematic devices installed on ONE’s reefer box fleet demonstrate the company’s pursuit of innovation and commitment to service excellence. As an industry leader, ONE strives to enhance customer relationships by leveraging technology and digital transformation, which is essential for the container shipping industry moving forward,” the company said.

The telematic device installation project comes as ONE expands it box carrier fleet. It has an orderbook for 20 large new container vessels with a carrying capacity of over 13,700 TEUs to be delivered in 2025 and 2026.

ONE ordered 10 of the ships in May 2021 and another 10 in March 2022. They will be ready for methanol and ammonia fuel and equipped with a bow cover and other energy-saving technologies.

ONE was formed on July 7, 2017 from the integration of the liner services of Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K” LINE), Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK).

The new entity operates from its global headquarters in Singapore, supported by regional headquarters in Hong Kong, Singapore, the United Kingdom, the United States and Brazil.

ONE operates more than 200 vessels that more than 170 services to 120 countries and beyond. It is the world’s seventh largest container carrier with about 1.52 million TEU capacity.
