The Philippine government has extended from August 1 until August 15 travel restrictions it currently imposes on 10 countries to prevent the spread of COVID-19 variants, particularly the highly infectious Delta variant, in the country.

The travel ban covers India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Oman, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, according to Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases Resolution No. 130 dated July 29.

The Philippines last April started to implement a travel ban on incoming passengers from India due to the surge in COVID-19 cases in that country. In May, the travel ban was expanded to cover Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, UAE, and Oman. On July 16, a travel ban was imposed on India, and on July 25 it was expanded to cover Malaysia and Thailand.

The Department of Health (DOH) on July 22 emphasized the need to continuously enforce strict border control measures and intensify local COVID-19 responses against the local transmission of the Delta variant in the Philippines.

In a report on July 29, DOH said there are now a total of 116 Delta variant cases; 1,858 Alpha variant cases; 2,146 Beta variant cases; and 22 P.3 variant cases.
