The P4-billion Lagonglong Port in Misamis Oriental recently broke ground, with the facility expected to be completed by March 2025.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel, Jr. highlighted the significance of the port in advancing agricultural output, ensuring food accessibility, and achieving national food security.

He said the port is poised to significantly enhance trade capabilities in Mindanao, fortify logistics capacity in the region, and generate employment.

The initial phase, with an annual throughput capacity of 3.3 million metric tons of bulk cargo, entails an investment of P1.4 billion.

The private commercial port development is spearheaded by Amadi MGT Terminals Inc.

Aboitiz Construction will undertake construction of the multigrain terminal.

The port will feature storage facilities and modern equipment for handling both international and domestic cargo, including perishable goods.

Tiu Laurel emphasized the importance of replicating such ports, noting their critical role in the country’s modernization.

Once complete, he projected the port would reduce feed costs by 2.5% to 5% and fertilizer costs by 5% to 10%.

The agriculture chief noted the port will help make efficient the transport of essential goods and maintain quality of agricultural products and raw materials through the provision of storage facilities.

It is also expected to catalyze the establishment of factories, processing plants, and other value-adding facilities, drawing from the Agriculture secretary’s experience in similar developments in Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and other areas in the Western Pacific.

Tiu Laurel urged Amadi to allocate space for the agency’s cold storage, ice stands, and silos to support various agricultural products.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri, Misamis Oriental governor Peter Unabia, Rep. Christian Unabia, Agriculture undersecretary Roger Navarro, and Lagonglong mayor Jay Albert Puertas.
