Marina cites shipbuilding sector’s gains from Korean, French ties
  • Maritime Industry Authority says its partnership with South Korean and French maritime experts has further improved the development of shipbuilding and ship repair industry
  • SBSR technical experts in a meeting with Marina updated participants on the accredited maritime companies’ contributions to research and development activities relating to naval architecture and shipbuilding

The Philippines has further enhanced the development of its shipbuilding and ship repair (SBSR) industry through its partnership with South Korean and French maritime experts, the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) told a hybrid meeting with officials of the country’s Marina-accredited maritime companies.

The meeting on January 26 was organized by Marina’s Shipyards Regulation Service (SRS) and presided over by SRS director Ramon Hernandez.

On November 8, 2022, Marina signed a memorandum of agreement with the French Embassy in Manila that will strengthen maritime safety and security in the country by providing technical assistance, training and consultancy service to the Marina shipbuilding and ship repair.

Marina partnered with the French embassy to assist it in the assessment and effective implementation of the Maritime Industry Development Plan.

SRS director Ramon Hernandez said Marina and Busan Marine Engineering Association (BUEA) had implemented the Integrated Ship Construction Support System Project, a fruit of the cooperation agreement both sides signed in November 2022.

Marina and BUEA agreed to grow and boost the trade and business ties between the Philippines and South Korea in shipbuilding and maritime business during the Korea-Philippines Ship Technology Development Cooperation Forum in November.

The Marina SRS and BUEA met the domestic shipping companies on January 16 at the Marina Central Office in Manila.

Korean Ambassador Hyoung Kyu Park said their project with Marina will enhance the development of the maritime sector, particularly in the shipbuilding and ship repair industry, as well as the country’s domestic shipping industry.

The application period for the shipping firms to avail of Phase 1 of the project offered by BUEA, particularly the conceptual design including general arrangement, outline specification, main equipment list and indicated ship price (P/I), is scheduled until February 15, 2023.

Marina officials and Ambassador Park visited two shipyards, the Josefa Slipways Inc. and RAJ&T Marine Services Inc. in Navotas City on January 13. The Marina SRS and BUEA met the domestic shipping companies on January 16 at the Marina Central Office in Manila.

In the Jan 26 meeting, the SBSR technical experts updated the participants on the accredited maritime companies’ contributions to research and development activities relating to naval architecture and shipbuilding.

Hernandez encouraged marine survey firms to form their own association as it would be beneficial for the improvement and development of the country’s maritime industry.

There are 12 Marina-accredited maritime companies conducting inclining test and stability calculation and assessment nationwide. Eight of these are looking into formulation and review of policies relative to the design, construction and safety of Philippine registered ships.

The maritime companies are Dhitect Marine and Engineering Consultants, Skytyl Ship Design and Consultancy, Navis Engineering and Marine Services, R.C. Almodal Ship Designs and Services, JM Marine Services, Sarangani Engineering Works, Seals Naval Architects and Engineering Company and GJC del Rosario Marine Engineering Services.
