Maersk will build a US$174-million “green and smart” flagship logistics center in Shanghai, China, which it aims to open by the third quarter of 2024.

The company in a statement said it signed in late December 2022 a land grant contract for the project site with the administrative committee of Lingang Special Area of the Shanghai Free Trade Zone.

The facility will be Maersk’s first environmentally friendly and technologically equipped logistics center in China, said Caroline Wu, managing director of Maersk Greater China.

With an area of about 113,000 square meters, the Lingang logistics center will have a 150,000 sqm warehousing storage comprising four ramped three-storey-high standard warehouses and one 24-meter-tall warehouse equipped with an automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS).

Wu said the facility will apply for platinum-level LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for the project.

The facility will be built using advanced ecologically friendly construction materials and be equipped with a rainwater management system and solar panels to optimize efficiency in water and energy consumption, Maersk said.

Upon completion, it will achieve net-zero emission, further improving the environmental footprint, as the facility will be equipped with LED lighting, nature ventilation, non-fossil energy heating systems and electric vehicle and equipment-charging piles, the company added.

The center will provide customers with a wide range of integrated logistics services, including international export consolidation, regional and global order fulfillment and distribution, cross border e-commerce and other value-added logistics services.

“Maersk is continuously enhancing its logistics capabilities to offer integrated end-to-end solutions to customers worldwide. Shanghai plays a critical role for Maersk global network,” Wu said.

“With Lingang’s proximity to Yangshan port and its favorable free trade policies, our flagship logistics centre will provide agile and sustainable solutions connecting and simplifying our customers’ supply chains.”

Wu said Maersk will continue to invest in China, contributing to Shanghai’s position as a global leading shipping and logistics center and to the resilience of global supply chains.
