The expansion of the Laguindingan Airport Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) will increase capacity by 72% to 860 from 500 passengers, addressing congestion at the second busiest airport in Mindanao.
The airport currently accommodates 790 passengers, beyond current capacity.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr), Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), and the local government of Misamis Oriental broke ground on the PTB expansion on February 4.
The project is expected to be completed in June 2024.
“The upcoming expansion project will not only provide better passenger experience but will also push further our goals towards sustainability,” Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista said in a statement.
Featuring modular construction with pre-fabricated structural steel, the expansion project promises cost-effectiveness, swift construction, and sustainability, according to DOTr.
The upgraded facility will provide a more efficient and comfortable travel experience for passengers at the Northern Mindanao airports serving Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, and Marawi, as well as the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Norte, and Bukidnon, DOTr added.
The project is also poised to generate employment, economic growth, and tourism not only in Misamis Oriental but across the entire Mindanao region, the agency said.
