International trade lawyer Uvero appointed DTI assistant secretary

International trade lawyer Agaton Teodoro Uvero has been appointed by President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. as assistant secretary at the Department of Trade and Industry.

Uvero returns to public service after his stint as deputy commissioner for Assessment and Operations Coordinating Group at the Bureau of Customs from 2013 to 2016. In 2015 he also chaired the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Sub-Committee on Customs Procedures.

A long-time columnist of PortCalls, with a column entitled “Across Borders”, Uvero also authored the book “Understanding International Trade, Tariff and Customs”. The book is a thorough discussion of Philippine customs and trading rules in easy-to-understand language. It explains major provisions of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA) or Republic Act No. 10863 (An Act Modernizing the Customs and Tariff Administration).

He is senior partner at Worldtrade Consultants, Inc., chairman of Grupo Uvero, Inc, and editorial chairman of Asia Customs & Trade, a sister unit of PortCalls.

He is a regular speaker in local and international conferences, having lectured at the Ateneo Graduate School of Business-Center for Continuing Education and BayanTrade Academy on International Supply Chain Management; UP Law Center; and Ateneo School of Law (Mandatory Continuing Legal Education Program) on international trade, tariff and customs.

Uvero has an Advance Certificate in International Supply Chain Management from International Trade Centre (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development/World Trade Organization). He holds degrees in Philosophy and Law (Juris Doctor) from the University of the Philippines and is an alumnus of East West Center (Hawaii).
