Hong Kong port cargo volume falls 18.4% in 2Q

Total port cargo throughput in Hong Kong decreased by 18.4% to 55.0 million tonnes in the second quarter of 2021 compared with the same period of 2020, according to government statistics.

Of the total, inward cargo decreased by 28.1% year-on-year to 34.3 million tonnes, while outward cargo increased by 4.8% compared to 20.7 million tonnes previously, the Census and Statistics Department said,

For inward cargo, imports decreased by 44.6% in the second quarter of 2021 to 17.5 million tonnes year-on-year, while inward transshipment increased by 4.3% to 16.8 million tonnes from the same period a year ago.

For outward cargo, exports (including domestic exports and re-exports) and outward transshipment increased by 8.7% to 5.2 million tonnes and 3.5% to 15.6 million tonnes in the second quarter of 2021 versus the second quarter of 2020.

The port of Hong Kong handled 4.59 million TEUs of containers in the second quarter of 2021, an increase of 1.8% compared with the second quarter of 2020.

Of this total, laden containers increased by 2.9% to 3.83 million TEUs, while empty containers decreased by 3.0% to 0.76 million TEUs.

Among laden containers, inward and outward containers increased by 1.0% to 2.02 million TEUs and 5.0% to 1.81 million TEUs.

The number of ocean vessel arrivals decreased by 31.4% to 4,264 in the second quarter year-on-year, with the total capacity also decreasing by 36.7% to 60.2 million net tons. Meanwhile, the number of river vessel arrivals decreased by 25.1% to 12,145, with the total capacity also decreasing by 47.0% to 13.7 million net tons.

For the first half of 2021, total port cargo throughput decreased by 16.4% year-on-year to 104.2 million tonnes.

Of this total, inward cargo decreased by 23.6% year-on-year to 66.2 million tonnes, while outward cargo increased by 0.1% year-on-year to 38.0 million tonnes.

For inward cargo, imports decreased by 36.6% to 35.5 million tonnes year-on-year, while inward transshipment increased by 0.2% to 30.7 million tonnes year-on-year.

For outward cargo, exports increased by 3.5% to 9.3 million tonnes in the first half of 2021 year-on-year, while outward transshipment decreased by 1.0% to 28.6 million tonnes year-on-year.

In the first half of 2021, the port of Hong Kong handled 8.71 million TEUs of containers, an increase of 1.1% compared with the first half of 2020.

Of this total, laden and empty containers increased by 0.7% and 3.3% to 7.20 million TEUs and 1.50 million TEUs, respectively.

Among laden containers, inward containers decreased by 0.1% to 3.80 million TEUs, while outward containers increased by 1.6% to 3.40 million TEUs.

The number of ocean vessel arrivals decreased by 34.5% to 8,116 in the first half of 2021 against the first half of 2020, with the total capacity also decreasing by 38.8% to 118.9 million net tons. The number of river vessel arrivals decreased by 37.9% to 22,353, with the total capacity also decreasing by 48.3% to 25.7 million net tons.
