EvergreenTaiwan’s container shipping company Evergreen Line has confirmed it made an order for ten 2,800-TEU box ships from two shipyards as part of a strategy to bolster its intra-Asia service.

Reports said the carrier will order five box ships from Taiwan’s China Shipbuilding Corporation for US$36 million to $39 million each, and the rest from Imabari Shipbuilding of Japan for the same price.

All the vessels have a delivery target scheduled for the second half of 2017 and are to be deployed in the carrier’s intra-regional network. They will also be used to replace old vessels and returned chartered vessels.

Evergreen projects a flourishing intra-Asia trade, particularly with the formal launch of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ economic community this year and the ongoing negotiations on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership.
