  • The Department of Transportation expects to complete maintenance works for 18 airports and conclude 20 port projects by June
  • DOTr wants the projects completed in time for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s first State of the Nation Address in July
  • DOTr also reported that different contract packages for the North-South Commuter Railway and contract packages for the Metro Manila Subway Project have been finalized

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is targeting to complete maintenance works for 18 airports and conclude around 20 port projects by June, according to Transport Secretary Jaime Bautista.

The projects will be completed in time for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s first State of the Nation Address in July, Bautista said during a press briefing in Malacañang on April 11.

Projects for the road sector, which include bike lanes, are also being completed, said Bautista.

During a sectoral meeting with Marcos also today, Bautista said DOTr also reported the finalization of different contract packages for the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR), as well as for the Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP).

The 147-kilometer NSCR Project will have a total of 35 stations and 51 commuter train sets and seven express train sets serving the rail line.

The project aims to provide ease of mobility and connectivity within the National Capital Region, CALABARZON and Central Luzon, and is expected to generate direct and indirect employment to a total of 110,000 people during its construction phase.

DOTr signed last January Contract Package 04, which covers the electro-mechanical systems and track works for the first segment of NSCR, while Contract Package NS-01, which includes the electromechanical system for the Malolos-Clark and Blumentritt-Calamba sections, was signed last March.

Bautista had said earlier that partial operations will begin in the third quarter of 2026, while full operations will start in 2029.

The MMSP, meanwhile, will have 17 stations connecting Valenzuela City to Pasay City and is expected to serve over 519,000 passengers daily once it becomes operational. Four contract packages have already been awarded while seven or eight contract packages will be bid out and awarded this year to ensure continuous operations of the project, Bautista earlier said.

DOTr also reported developments in relation to the completion of railway projects that include the Metro Rail Transit-7, which the agency expects to be completed by June 2025, as well as the extension of Light Rail Transit Line 1 from Baclaran to Sucat, expected to be completed by 2024.
