The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is looking for permanent solutions to recurring problems affecting the country’s transportation systems and commuters, Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista told a Congress hearing on Tuesday, January 10.

Bautista appeared before the House Committee on Transportation hearing the New Year’s Day airport shutdown caused by a system glitch at the Philippine Air Traffic Management Center in the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) compound in Pasay City.

Bautista assured lawmakers the DOTr is seeking solutions to the transport problems, especially issues that affect the country’s air traffic navigation system.

“We hope to convey to our honorable lawmakers and to the riding public, that we are committed in coming up with permanent solutions to recurring problems affecting passengers and commuters,” Secretary Bautista tells the members of the House Committee on Transportation chaired by Antipolo City 2nd District Rep. Romeo Acop.

Bautista also apologized for the inconvenience the shutdown caused international and domestic passengers whose flights were delayed by the airport shutdown.

He said he had informed President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. that 90% of operations at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport had been restored within 24 hours after the shutdown.

He added that an intra-agency investigation is being conducted on the source of the air traffic navigation system glitch.

The DOTr said the House hearing will also give the transport department an opportunity to highlight the critical need for technical and financial support in upgrading the facilities at the CAAP, Ninoy Aquino International Airport, and other regional airports in the country.
