DHL recently opened its latest electric vehicle (EV) Center of Excellence in Shanghai to support EV manufacturers grow their presence, locally and internationally.

It is DHL’s first such center in China, the world’s largest EV market. Similar Centers of Excellence can be found in Indonesia, Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom.

The Shanghai facility is managed by DHL Global Forwarding, developed on cooperation with Team EV of DHL Customer Solutions and Innovation, DHL Express, and DHL Supply Chain.

Niki Frank, CEO of DHL Global Forwarding APAC, noted that last year, Chinese automakers dominated the global EV market, manufacturing more than half of the EVs on the road worldwide. China is also the world’s biggest car exporter.

Frank in a statement said: “As a battery powerhouse, China is home to six of the top 10 EV battery manufacturers, supplying close to 60 percent of the world’s battery cells. Our deep understanding of the logistical complexities in the EV industry, coupled with our expansive global network, positions us to facilitate this next chapter of international expansion for Chinese EV firms.”

With the Shanghai EV Center for Excellence, DHL aims to be the partner of choice for customers seeking global business growth, he added.

The China facility specializes in seamless, integrated end-to-end logistics for EV products, including batteries, electric motors, and charging infrastructure, among others. A team of specialists ensures efficient handling, storage, and transportation of the EV sector.

Dongming Wu, CEO of DHL Express China, said: “It takes an entire ecosystem to support the growth of Chinese EV makers as they expand globally. As the logistics company for the world, we have the know-how in the trade policies and customs regulations of various countries.”

Wu added that from documents, parts to raw materials, “DHL is fully capable of providing stable and reliable logistics support for industry players in China to tap into the overseas market.”

One of the features of the Shanghai EV Center of Excellence is its fully integrated, modular, end-to-end logistics solutions for finished vehicles and batteries.

Fathi Tlatli, Global Auto-Mobility Sector President at DHL CSI, said: “Through our global team of experts, we collaborate with our customers to design compliant, cost-efficient supply chains tailored to their needs.”

As an example, he cited their Dangerous Goods specialists who worked with customers to ensure compliant movement of battery cells in line with global and local dangerous goods regulations.

The Shanghai EV Center of Excellence is backed by DHL Global Forwarding’s network of 35 branches positioned to optimize major gateways across China. It has a network of more than 50 warehouses and cross-dock facilities with a presence in major commercial cities.
