Car-free Sundays on Roxas Boulevard will begin on May 26, an initiative by the Manila city government designed to promote a healthy lifestyle among Manileños and other Metro Manila residents.

Manila mayor Maria Sheilah ‘Honey’ Lacuna-Pangan on May 13 signed Ordinance No. 9047 or the Move Manila Car Free Sundays by the Bay to make the stretch of Roxas Boulevard from Padre Burgos Circle to Quirino Avenue partly car-free from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

The initiative could encourage individuals to shed off some of the excess weight gained during the pandemic while they appreciate the historical, cultural, and economic significance of Roxas Boulevard from Luneta to Quirino Avenue, the mayor said.

The project was supposed to be implemented at an earlier date but was postponed due to insufficient time for preparations. A dry run was conducted on May 12.

Lacuna-Pangan said alternate routes will be provided for motorists. The Roxas Boulevard service road can be used by light vehicles while heavier vehicles can use Taft Avenue.

The Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority earlier advised motorists to take the following routes during the closure of Roxas Boulevard to vehicular traffic:

  • Vehicles northbound of Roxas Blvd. may turn right at Quirino Ave. to point of destination
  • Vehicles southbound of Roxas Blvd. may turn left at P. Burgos Ave. to point of destination
  • Vehicles coming from the three bridges (Jones, Mc Arthur and Quezon) intending to utilize Roxas Blvd. may go straight to Taft Ave. to point of destination.
  • Vehicles coming from westbound of P. Burgos Ave. intending to utilize southbound lane of Roxas Blvd. may make a full turn at roundtable straight to Ma. Orosa St. then turn right to Kalaw Ave. to point of destination
  • Vehicles coming from westbound of Kalaw Ave. intending to use southbound lane of Roxas Blvd. may turn left at M.H. del Pilar St. to point of destination.
  • Vehicles coming from westbound of U.N. Ave. intending to use southbound lane of Roxas Blvd. may turn left to M.H. del Pilar St. to point of destination
  • Trailer trucks/heavy vehicles coming from Del Pan Bridge may turn around at Anda Circle to northbound lane of Mel Lopez Blvd. to C-3 to point of destination
  • Vehicles coming from Finance Road to P. Burgos Avenue may then turn right to Bonifacio Drive to point of destination.
