Construction of the five-kilometer Candaba 3rd Viaduct is 50% complete with the installation of the first girder marking the transition from groundwork-heavy to road-level work, according to tollway operator NLEX Corp.

The transition to road-level work minimizes the project’s dependence on ground access and ensures that work can continue in all-weather conditions, the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) operator said in a statement. This milestone coincides with the project’s attainment of one million safe manhours.

“This remarkable achievement shows NLEX’s commitment to complete the project by November 2024,” NLEX Corp. president and general manager J. Luigi Bautista said.

“We are very glad that our chosen construction partner, Leighton Contractors (Asia) Limited, is one with us in our objective to expedite work on the project, while prioritizing the safety of all workers and ensuring the structural soundness of the new bridge,” Bautista added.

There are plans though for construction to be divided into three zones, with each zone opened to motorists as soon as completed, Bautista said in a speech during the Confederation of Truckers Association of the Philippines’ founding anniversary celebration on February 23.

Started in 2022, the Candaba 3rd Viaduct project is situated between two existing bridges connecting the towns of Pulilan, Bulacan, and Apalit, Pampanga.

NLEX Corp. earlier said that based on previous studies, the construction of the third viaduct is necessary as the current structures are aging and operating at a reduced capacity. The Candaba Viaduct has been a vital link for motorists traveling between Metro Manila and the provinces in Central and North Luzon for over 50 years. It has withstood natural disasters such as severe typhoons and extreme earthquakes.

Upon the third viaduct’s completion, the Candaba Viaduct will be widened to three lanes with inner and outer shoulders in each direction, enhancing safety and mobility for motorists.
