Borongan Airport has been allocated P200 million from the 2024 national budget to upgrade infrastructure.

The airport is currently undergoing a 200-meter extension of its 1.3-kilometer runway.

House Minority Leader Marcelino Libanan of 4Ps party-list said the upgrade will increase airport capacity and accommodate more commercial flights. Ultimately it will improve transfer of people and goods and boost tourism in Eastern Samar, according to House Minority Leader Marcelino Libanan.

The airport serves Eastern Samar province and the coastal capital city of Borongan, a known surfing spot.

The solon expressed optimism other airlines will also operate at the airport since the country’s flag carrier, Philippine Airlines, is already offering weekly flights between Cebu and Borongan and vice versa.

The P5.768-trillion national budget for 2024 includes funding for the construction, rehabilitation, and improvement of aviation infrastructure in the country, such as Laoag International Airport (P500 million), Ninoy Aquino International Airport (P1.636 billion), and the development/expansion of Pag-Asa Island Airport (P1.5 billion).

The 2024 GAA was signed into law by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on December 20, 2023.
