Bureau of Customs-Davao (BOC-Davao) has taken delivery of two trace detection systems (TDS) that will be used to further intensify measures against the entry of contraband at Davao ports.

The devices were received on April 22 and are part of 16 units BOC will deploy at various ports around the country to further boost the agency’s non-intrusive inspection capability.

TDS model NUCTECH TR3000DE is produced by Chinese security inspection products company Nuctech Co. Ltd. It is designed to detect explosives, narcotics, and drug substances of small amounts, BOC said in a statement.

Detection is done by sampling non-visible trace amounts of particulates from shipments. The newly acquired system boasts a throughput of three times more than the traditional systems, BOC noted.

BOC-Davao district collector Erastus Sandino Austria told PortCalls in a text message that the TDS will be deployed at seaports. The equipment is not urgently needed at Davao International Airport for now as only one airline has resumed operations. Austria said he will later request for lighter TDS units for airport use.

BOC earlier said it deployed two units of TDS at the Manila International Container Port and another two units at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. One unit each was deployed at the ports of Cagayan de Oro, Manila, and the Customs Anti-Drug Task Force.

The remaining units will be deployed until May, with two in Cebu and one each in Zamboanga, Limay, Subic, Clark, and Batangas.
