The Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP) broke ground on Feb 13 for the Anonas and Camp Aguinaldo Stations and tunnels under Contract Package 103.

At the ground-breaking ceremony, Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista noted the far-reaching benefits of the big-ticket railway project, such as providing comfort and convenience for commuters, creation of employment opportunities, and aiding Philippine economic development.

“Today is another critical step towards that aspiration, towards the convenience and comfort of Filipino commuters, and towards a transport infrastructure that catalyzes economic rebound,” he said in a statement.

“This ground-breaking inside a military camp depicts the overlapping multisectoral support for the MMSP. The Secretary of Defense is accompanied by the AFP Chief of Staff and the local chief executive of Quezon City to express their support,” he added.

Bautista expressed gratitude to the Japanese government and the Department of National Defense for supporting the country’s first-ever underground railway.

A loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency will fund the entire MMSP, which has a cost of P488.47 billion.

When fully complete, the 33-kilometer subway line will cut across eight cities and have 17 stations from Valenzuela City to FTI-Bicutan in Parañaque City, with a spur line to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 in Pasay City.

Once fully operational, the subway can accommodate around 519,000 passengers daily and significantly reduce travel time between Quezon City to NAIA from 1.5 hours to 35 minutes. The MMSP will also interconnect with other rail systems in Metro Manila.
