Air carriers lift 16.7% less PH international cargo in 2014

ID-100364183International cargoes (both cargo and mail) carried by local and foreign air carriers operating in the Philippines dropped 16.7% to 337.465 million kilograms in 2014 from 405.178 million kg in 2013, mainly due to a sharp decline in outgoing shipments.

According to just released Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) data, the volume of outbound shipments last year fell 35.3% to 172.568 million kg from 266.561 million kg in 2013. Inbound cargoes, on the other hand, increased 19% to 164.897 million kg from 138.617 million kg.

Top airlines for 2014

Philippines Airlines lifted 159.957 million kg or 47.4% of the total, replacing AHK Air Hong Kong which led the 2013 list.

Also climbing one spot higher in 2014 was Hong Kong-based carrier Cathay Pacific with 51.262 million kg or 15.2% of the total, followed by Singapore Airlines with 18.296 million kg or a 5.6% share.

Express operator United Parcel Service (UPS) handled 16.773 million kg of air cargo, landing in fourth place with a 5% share, while AHK Air Hong Kong dropped to fifth spot with 16.571 million kg for a 4.9% share.

Korean Airlines placed sixth with 16.223 million kg (4.8%) followed by United Arab Emirates flag carrier Etihad Airways with 15.349 million kg (4.5%).

Ranking eighth was Taiwan-based Eva Air, which carried 14.954 million kg or 4.4% while US carrier Delta Airlines airlifted 12.345 million kg or 4% of the total and came in at number nine.

Completing the top 10 was Dubai-based Emirates with 11.378 million kg or a 3.4% share of the aggregate.

Rounding up the 2014 list by rank are Qatar Airways (10.064 million kg), China Airlines (9.367 million kg), Thailand International Airways (9.224 million kg), Japan Airlines (8.497 million kg), Asiana Airlines (7.796 million kg), Kuwait Airways (4.339 million kg), Gulf Air (3.911 million kg), Malaysia Airlines 3.701 million kg), KLM (2.998 million kg), China Southern (2.813 million kg), PAL Express (2.783 million kg), Qantas (2.067 million kg), Saudia (1.826 million kg), Jetstar Asia (732,435 kg), Air China (709,421 kg), Continental Micronesia (454,725 kg), El Israel Airlines (366,885 kg), Royal Brunei (319,445 kg), Air Nuigini (233,915 kg), and Cargolux (99,342 kg). – Roumina Pablo
