craneThe government of Vietnam is planning to raise the number of ports at a coastal economic zone in Quang Ngai province to more than 20 by 2030 and beyond.

The Ministry of Transport intends to implement a revised zoning scheme that will see the construction of 27 ports at the Dung Quat deep-sea port No. 2 at the Dung Quat Economic Zone in the central province of Quang Ngai over the next 15 years.

The project will be carried out in four stages, to start with the building of the southern ports until 2020. The second phase will focus on the northern ports and targets a completion date of 2025, while the third phase will center on establishing ports that can handle heavy container ships with a timeframe to last until 2030.

The final phase will see 11 more ports being built after 2030, according to local news reports.

The project, covering a total area of 1,850 hectares, is part of a government development plan for five coastal economic zones in Vietnam that will be undertaken through a combination of private investments and state funding.

Customs and tax reforms

In related news, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) said it will streamline tax and customs procedures to bolster ease of doing business in the Southeast Asian country.

The MOF said a plan detailing tax and customs reforms has been submitted to the government and could be administered starting September this year.

It aims to simplify tax procedures through a revamp of the criteria for VAT and corporate income tax declaration and by encouraging businesses to pay taxes online.

In addition, there are plans to slash average time spent on registering social insurance payments by half by the year’s end.
