THE Philippine government is spending P20 billion to modernize six airports before privatizing them.

Transportation secretary Manuel Roxas II said bidding for Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminals 1 and 3, Puerto Princesa in Palawan, Laguindingan in Misamis Oriental, Panglao in Bohol, and Daraga in Albay may be held within the year.

The P1.5-billion NAIA 1 rehabilitation project involves structural and aesthetical improvements, and construction of two-rapid taxiways to boost the airport’s flight handling capacity to 45 take-offs and landings per hour from the current 36.

DMCI, DDT Konstract Inc, Hillmarcs Corp, EEI Corp, and Datem Inc have been invited to submit proposals on the terminal’s structural and aesthetical improvements.

The modernization of Terminal 3 will depend on who will take over the facility. The government and terminal builders have been fighting for years over control of the terminal. This after the Piatco concession contract was declared null by the Supreme Court owing to certain illegal provisions.

Bidding for the P4.46-billion Puerto Princesa airport will be in the third quarter and construction before yearend. Funds will come from the Korean government’s Economic Development Fund. The Puerto Princesa Underground River was recently selected as one of the world’s New Seven Wonders of Nature, a development expected to boost passenger arrivals at the airport.

The Laguindingan airport project in Misamis Oriental is now undergoing construction for completion by December. The airport’s operation and maintenance contract will be auctioned off by mid-year.

Project studies for the airports in Panglao, Bohol and Daraga, Albay have been completed. Each of the projects costs P4 billion.
