Hong Kong AAT cargo traffic rises 23% in February

Asia Airfreight Terminal (AAT), a cargo terminal operator at the Hong Kong International Airport, announced a tonnage throughput of 51,690 tonnes in February 2012, a growth of 23 percent over the same period last year.

Export cargo for last month registered 33,249 tonnes, an increase of 27 percent compared with February 2010. Import cargo volume for February was 17,955 tonnes, up 18 percent year-on-year, while transshipment volume reached 486 tonnes, a drop of 14 percent against the corresponding period in 2011.

Cumulative export tonnage from January to February 2012 was 66,395 tonnes, a slight drop of 3 percent against the same period last year. Total import tonnage for the first two months was 35,067 tones, representing a 6 percent year-on-year growth. Transshipment cargo volume since the beginning of the year was 1,009 tones, a reduction of 17 percent against the same period last year.

“In view of the slowdown in global trade, we can only be cautiously optimistic about the possible recovery later this year,” said Kenneth Yeung, AAT general manager for corporate development.
