cargo airlineAsia-Pacific contributed the biggest airfreight volume and revenue growth in June, as the month sustained the growth momentum of global cargo, according to the WorldACD Index.

Cargo market data aggregator WorldACD said the industry has had a good half-year, logging in June a 4.8 percent volume growth year-over-year to maintain this year’s global average.

Revenue grew even more, as for the first time in 2.5 years, worldwide traffic registered a month with a year-over-year increase, growing 0.9 percent in June.

The WorldACD Index “inched further upwards” for the 12th consecutive month to 111.1.

The organization noted that once again, volumes increased the most from Asia-Pacific at 9.6 percent in June. Europe was the weakest area, as outgoing volumes slipped by 1.5 percent compared to the same period last year.

Business between Asia-Pacific and North America got a boost in June, with a 17 percent volume increase in both directions. The biggest revenue gains in the month went to airlines from the Middle East and Asia-Pacific. On average they added 9.7 percent year-over-year.

Middle Eastern airlines achieved this through a mixture of volume and yield growth, while airlines from Asia-Pacific on average owed their revenue growth purely to volume increase, noted WorldACD.

JAL soars

Meanwhile, Japan Airlines (JAL) reported a rise in both international cargo volume and revenue in the first quarter of its fiscal year 2014.

From April 1 to June 30, the carrier’s volumes in terms of revenue-cargo-ton-kilometers increased by 16.5 percent from the same quarter of last year, and cargo revenue increased by 9.2 percent to JPY14 billion (US$136.16 million).

“In international cargo operations, we actively captured automobile-related shipments prompted by the moderate recovery of exports, improved revenue management, and efficiently captured transit shipments such as perishables in an effort to maximize revenues,” said JAL in a statement.
