The Bureau of Customs-Port of Cebu (BOC-Cebu) exceeded its August collection target of P2.97 billion by 18.45%, taking in P3.52 billion for the month.

The latest collection was also 434.75% higher than the P657.69 million recorded in the same month last year, BOC-Cebu said in a statement. The collection district has also been hitting its monthly revenue targets since January.

From January to date, BOC-Cebu has recorded P28.09 billion in revenues and posted a running collection surplus of P3.18 billion year-to-date. The collection for the first eight months was 31.22% year-on-year higher than a year ago.

Top importers

The announcement of the BOC-Cebu collection performance came after the port recently celebrated its 136th anniversary on August 26. At the event, the port recognized and gave out plaques of appreciation to its top 10 importers in 2021.

The top importers were Filoil Logistics Corp., Seaoil Philippines Inc.; Ecossential Foods Corp., Therma Visayas Inc. Steelasia Manufacturing Corp., AD Gothong Manufacturing, Kepco SPC Power Corp., National Grid Corporation of the Philippines, Joyland Industries Corp., and Cebu Energy Development Corp.

Atty Erwin C. Andaya, Bureau of Customs Port of Cebu Customer Care Center and Administrative Division head, also received a special award during the celebrations. The award recognizes his exemplary performance (with a rating of 87.88%) at the 2020/2021 bar examinations.

BOC-Cebu district collector Charlito Martin R. Mendoza called for sustained reform initiatives at the port, with this year’s commitment to reform, evolve, and upskill.

“All that we have accomplished together now serve as fuel to accelerate transformation. The port needs transformative actions to remain responsive to our stakeholders’ needs in these changing times,” Mendoza said.

BOC deputy commissioner for internal administration group, Donato B. San Juan delivered the keynote message on behalf of Commissioner Yogi Filemon Ruiz who urged Customs personnel to sustain their reform initiatives.

“We shall continue with these reforms to completion. Part of these is upskilling our workforce, which is the only way for us to progress with the advances in technology, with no one getting left behind. We have established the Customs Training Institute based on our competency framework to provide our personnel with the best training they need. With all these in place, you can expect our full support.”

For this year, BOC-Cebu has been consistently surpassing its monthly targets since January, posting a total of P24.57 billion for the first seven months.

Meanwhile, the entire BOC system has already surpassed its revenue collection target of P58.849 billion for August, taking in as of August 23 P60.524 billion, 2.8% higher than the monthly target.

BOC noted it has been surpassing its monthly collection targets since January, and is poised to sustain its positive performance “through the implementation of its enhanced reform programs.”

For 2022, BOC revised its annual collection target upward to P721.5 billion from P679.226 billion earlier. Ruiz had said, however, that his agency’s internal target is higher at P740 billion and that the bureau is “on track to surpass it.”
