The Bureau of Customs (BOC) exceeded its March 2023 collection target by 10.86%, taking in P80.133 billion against its P72.282-billion target.

For the first quarter, the agency also surpassed its P197.02-billion goal by 8.43% after collecting P213.619 billion, BOC said in a statement.

The first quarter 2023 collection was also 13.29% higher than the P188.557 billion collected in the same quarter last year.

Customs commissioner Bienvenido Rubio attributed the strong collection performance to BOC’s five-point priority programs, including digitalizing Customs processes, simplifying procedures, curbing smuggling in all forms, and uplifting employee welfare and development.

“Our positive collection performance for the first quarter of 2023 is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our men and women at the Bureau. We will continue to implement our priority programs and introduce new initiatives to sustain this positive momentum,” Rubio said.

For 2023, BOC has been tasked to collect P901.3 billion, up from the P721-billion target last year and the P862.929 billion actual collection, the highest annual collection to date.

“We will continue to work hard and strive for excellence as we aim to become one of the world’s best Customs administrations,” Rubio said.

The previous Customs commissioner, Yogi Filemon Ruiz, even set a higher internal revenue collection target of P921 billion for 2023. The target is 2% more than the P901.3 billion set by the Development Budget Coordination Committee. It is also 28% more than this year’s goal of P721 billion.

It is not clear if Rubio will stick to this goal.
