BOC beats Jan collection target by 11.79%

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) beat its January collection target by 11.79%, taking in P70.327 billion against its goal of P62.911 billion.

The latest figure was also 20.53% higher than the P58.346 billion posted in January 2022, BOC said in a statement.

For the first month of the year, BOC conducted 36 apprehensions and seized approximately P908.137 million worth of various commodities for violating Republic Act No. 10863 or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.

Among the seized goods were P794.463 million worth of smuggled agricultural products and P104.833 million worth of illegal drugs.

BOC said it has sustained its “positive performance by heightening border protection measures and strengthening the BOC Anti-smuggling Program to ensure optimal lawful revenue collection.”

The customs bureau also continues to modernize and initiate policy reforms to combat customs fraud and corruption while ensuring efficient trade facilitation in the country, and in line with the eight-point socioeconomic agenda of the current administration.

For 2023, BOC has been tasked to collect P901.3 billion, up from the P721 billion target last year and the P862.929 billion actual collection, the highest annual collection to date.

But Acting Customs commissioner Yogi Filemon Ruiz earlier said the agency has set an internal revenue collection target of P921 billion for 2023. The target is 2% more than the P901.3 billion set by the Development Budget Coordination Committee, he said.
