  • Port operator Asian Terminals Inc.’s net income for the first half of 2022 grew 1%, tempered by higher operational expenses primarily incurred from rising cost of fuel, electricity, and other rental fees
  • Revenue was up 11.7% as revenue from Manila South Harbor and Batangas port grew 10.4% and 55.7%, respectively
  • Manila South Harbor and Batangas container ports collectively handled over 640,000 twenty-foot equivalent units of international boxes during the period
  • Batangas port handled 76% more completely-built car units at over 109,000
  • Passenger traffic jumped 233% to nearly 1.1 million

Port operator Asian Terminals Inc.’s (ATI) net income went up 1% to P1.14 billion in the first half from P1.128 billion posted in the same period last year.

Higher operational expenses primarily incurred from rising cost of fuel, electricity, and other rental fees tempered the income, ATI said in a statement. Cost and expenses rose 6.1% to P2.833 billion in the first half of 2022 from P2.670 billion in the same period last year.

On the other hand, revenue grew 11.7% to P6.105 billion from P5.466 billion.

Revenue from Manila South Harbor’s international containerized cargoes increased 10.4% from last year while revenue from Batangas port was 55.7% higher on account of higher roll-on/roll-off volumes and passenger traffic.

Manila South Harbor and Batangas container ports collectively handled over 640,000 twenty-foot equivalent units of international boxes during the period.

Batangas port, which serves as the premier car carrier port in the Philippines, handled over 109,000 completely-built car units (CBUs) from January to June, up 76% signaling the industry’s strong rebound since the onset of the pandemic.

The port’s newly-upgraded Batangas Passenger Terminal (BPT) facilitated the resurgence of interisland travel alongside the easing up of pandemic restrictions. BPT handled nearly 1.1 million outbound passengers for the six-month period, representing a volume growth of 233% compared to the same period in 2021.

Phase 1 of the BPT upgrade was officially unveiled in mid-June. The facility features highly organized indoor ticketing areas, huge LED travel advisory board, gender neutral restrooms, breastfeeding room, clinic, mobility features for the elderly and differently-abled, an ecumenical prayer room, free cellphone charging and wi-fi connectivity stations, among other amenities.

ATI said it is spending P1.3 billion for the fully-airconditioned and high-ceiled facility which can seat nearly 5,000 passengers upon full completion by 2023.
