Vietnam cargo volume continues to grow despite pandemic

Vietnamese seaports saw total volume of cargo increase 6% year-on-year in the first seven months of 2020, according to the Vietnam Maritime Administration.

The agency said total cargo for the period January-July surpassed 397.5 million tonnes, up 6% from the same period last year, reported state-run news agency VNA.

Of this figure, container goods reached over 11.8 million TEUs, marking a year-on-year rise of 8%.

In July alone, cargo figure was nearly 57.8 million tonnes, up 1%, including 1.68 million TEUs of container goods, up 2% from the same period last year.

Despite the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, several seaports still posted double-digit growth in the first half of this year, such as Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Nam Dinh, Can Tho, Thanh Hoa, Thai Binh, with growth ranging from 20% to 72%, the news report said.

Other ports saw significant growth in container goods such as My Tho, up 354%; Thanh Hoa, 115%; An Giang, 85%; and Da Nang, 11%.
