ID-100172586The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will be increasing its fine on trucks violating its truck ban policy to P2,000 from P500.

“This is different from the Manila city ordinance and we will recommend to the Land Transportation Office the suspension of the driver’s license for third-time violators,” MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said.

The increase was one of the resolutions approved by the Metro Manila City Council on July 8. As of press time, the resolution has yet to published.

According to MMDA, at least 1,985 truck ban violators have been apprehended from January 1 up to May 31 this year.

The MMDA truck ban prohibits cargo trucks and heavy vehicles with gross weight capacity of 4,500 kilograms from plying Metro Manila roads from 6am to 10 am and from 5pm to 10pm every day, except Sundays and holidays.

But in a resolution on June 9, the Metro Manila Council Special Traffic Committee designated for six months — from June 10 to December 10 — a 24-hour truck route in Metro Manila to help decongest the ports of Manila.

Except for Fridays, the resolution suspends the truck ban for the specific routes.

Not covered by the resolution is EDSA, where a total truck ban is still observed, as well as C5 Road, Katipunan Avenue, Commonwealth Avenue and other areas not specified as exempt from the 24-hour truck route.
