  • Quicker turnaround for trucks and vessels are expected when the new gantries are in service
  • The resulting efficiency gains will allow SBITC to stay ahead of the demand curve and handle more cargo shipments during peak shipping season

Subic Bay International Terminal Corp. (SBITC) is deploying four additional rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes at Port of Subic to boost its landside operations and improve overall productivity in support of the growth prospects of Northern and Central Luzon.

The RTGs, for delivery in the last week of September, will augment the terminal’s existing fleet of six to enable quicker truck and vessel turnaround for smoother cargo flow, SBITC parent International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) said in a statement.

The resulting efficiency gains will allow SBITC to stay ahead of the demand curve and cater to increased cargo shipments during the peak shipping season, ICTSI added.

SBITC started using RTGs in 2019, leading to reduced truck dwell times, improved yard utilization and a 42% increase in the terminal’s static capacity. The additional gantries should enable SBITC to further improve its service offerings to stakeholders and raise the industry standard in the region.

SBITC manages and operates New Container Terminals 1 and 2 at Subic Port, which has an annual capacity of 600,000 twenty-foot equivalent units.

Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority, which has jurisdiction over Subic Port, earlier forecast a 5% improvement to 265,938 TEUs in 2022 from the 253,274 TEUs recorded in 2021.
