The Siargao Airport development project broke ground on June 15, the same day that the rehabilitated sections of the airport were inaugurated. The airport was severely damaged at the height of Typhoon Odette, the strongest typhoon to hit the country in 2021.

The development project includes improvement of the passenger terminal building (PTB), powerhouse, perimeter fence, vehicle parking area, administration building, two-bay fire station building and expansion of apron.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) said that upon completion, the gateway to the surfing capital will be able to accommodate more passengers, provide wider connectivity and mobility, and help propel progress in the economy, tourism and commerce, which will benefit the people of Surigao del Norte.

“Our visitors have started coming here in Siargao and I hope with this new passenger terminal building, we will be able to accommodate more flights in the future. So, this is what we need this time of our recovery program. We are very proud of our airport here in the island!” Siargao Governor Francisco Matugas said at the ground breaking.

Also on June 15, the DOTr and Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines officials inaugurated the rehabilitated sections of Siargao Airport terminal damaged by Odette.

“Just five months after being battered by Typhoon Odette, the rehabilitation works at the Siargao Airport, which serves as the main gateway to the island hailed as the ‘Surfing Capital of the Philippines,’ have been completed,” the DOTr said in a statement.

This covered the rehabilitation of the PTB, rehabilitation and improvement of the departure area, check-in and arrival area, Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting building, and arrival area facade.

CAAP also completed its rehabilitation of Surigao Airport, which was also damaged during the onslaught of typhoon Odette.
