Today we have another guest columnist, another SCMAP past president. Ana Rose Ochoa, or Ochie, as she is popularly called, was president in 2004. She is also one of the longest-serving directors, starting in 1994, up to 2009 when she retired from Johnson & Johnson. With the launch of this year’s Salute to Supply Chain Excellence competition, an explanation is in order why Ochie is our guest columnist. SSCE had been a project of SCMAP for years, but failed to take off. Until Ochie brought the project to fruition in 2011 – Ed Sanchez

The 2012 Salute to Supply Chain Excellence (SSCE) Awards was launched last April 26 during the SCMAP General Membership Meeting held at the Hampton Room of the Astoria Plaza Hotel, Pasig City. Now on its second year, the Salute to Supply Chain Excellence awards is a way for member companies to exchange knowledge, and leverage their collective expertise to create and sustain the future growth and competitiveness of their organizations, in addition to gaining recognition for their work.

The SSCE awards was one of the flagship projects of 2011 President Dennis B. Llovido. The objectives of the awards search are to identify and reward outstanding performance among SCMAP companies and service providers and recognize the importance and opportunities offered by excellent supply chain management. It is also to celebrate as an industry the successes of the member companies and acknowledge significant improvements which may be considered a best practice in the industry that shall serve to educate and provide valuable insights, lessons, and applicable takeaways to members.

For this year, the SSCE award has three categories: Supply Chain Operational Excellence Awards, Third Party Logistics of the Year, and the Green Logistics Advocacy Award.

The Supply Chain Operational Excellence awards recognizes an SCMAP member organization that operates significant components of a supply chain and has demonstrated excellence in the design, operation or improvement of that supply chain in the Philippines. This award recognizes companies that drive supply chain excellence throughout the organization through developing efficient, sustainable and cost effective strategies in its operations, processes and services. The company must demonstrate measurable achievements in enhancing the bottom-line, maximizing customer satisfaction, reducing cost, increasing market share and gaining leadership position through strategic supply chain implementation. The winner of this category for 2011 was Integrated Commissary Center Inc. for their Insulated Container Box project, which enabled the use of dry truck instead of reefer trucks for transporting their products. This was an alternative approach in outbound distribution to bring down transport cost and improve service levels on delivery timeliness while maintaining the quality of goods.

The Third Party Logistics of the Year category recognizes the third party logistics provider who has proven excellence in developing and delivering supply chain solutions and services in the country. The company must have demonstrated excellence and innovation in addressing a significant supply chain challenge, the results of which can be quantified and proven to be sustainable in terms of cost savings, revenue and customer satisfaction. DHL Supply Chain Philippines won this award last year for their implementation of the Put-to-Light (PTL) technology in Watsons Personal Care Stores, a first for the supply chain industry in the Philippines. The PTL system automates the picking process through a light-guided product placement functionality resulting in picking accuracy, productivity and consequently a reduction in the overall logistics cost.

The Green Logistics Advocacy Award, which is a new category, recognizes a company that has made a significant contribution to the successful implementation of Green Logistics in his/her company through significant efforts to fully integrate environmental awareness into all areas of business strategy and operations. This category rewards those companies which have demonstrated unparalleled performance in environmental supply chain planning and execution. This may include stringent compliance with regulations, minimizing waste from the supply chain process as well as the overall adoption of green practices across the supply chain.

All SCMAP member companies are eligible to join the search and may join one or all of the categories and may send a maximum of three entries for their selected category. The project/initiative must either have been completed and/or implemented in 2011 or have measurable outcomes within the date range of Jan- March 2012. Prizes include a SCMAP trophy for each category; SCMAP sponsored annual membership fee (2013) for the winning company / Third Party Logistics Provider; Cash prize of P10K for and one free attendee to the 2013 SCMAP Annual Conference for the winning company for each category .A new change in the awards is that there will only be ONE winner for each category.

Winners shall be proclaimed on September 14, during the 2012 SCMAP Annual Conference and Exhibit at the Makati Shangri-La Plaza Hotel. All of the winners shall make a presentation of their break-through project during the Oct-Nov 2012 General Membership Meeting.

The SSCE Awards is a manifestation of SCMAP’s efforts to fulfill its vision of ALWAYS MOVING AHEAD in the supply chain management industry.
