Sociedad Puerto Industrial Aguadulce (Puerto Aguadulce) recently handled CMA CGM Argentina, the largest-capacity vessel to arrive in Colombia.

The arrival of the 1,572 twenty-equivalent unit vessel highlights the considerable operating capacity and strategic location of Puerto Aguadulce, located in Buenaventura, according to a statement by International Container Terminal Services, Inc, one of the joint venture partners in the port. The other JV partner is PSA International of Singapore.

CMA CGM Argentina was built in 2019 and sails under the Maltese flag.

“This news has great significance not only for the national port industry, but also for Buenaventura, for foreign trade and the country. In addition to ratifying the positive evolution seen in overcoming the challenges that the world has been facing during the last three years, this is a message of confidence and credibility for the Aguadulce terminal for its dedication and commitment in terms of service levels, safety, infrastructure, productivity, and the application of high international standards in its operations,” Puerto Aguadulce president Miguel Abisambra said.

The Puerto Aguadulce container terminal began operations in November 2016.

As the main gateway of Colombia, the Port of Buenaventura plays a key role in the movement of export and import cargo in the country. Located in the Valle del Cauca area – known for its sugarcane industry – the port is the main gateway of Colombian sugar as well-as the world-famous Colombian coffee.

The Aguadulce Peninsula is located across the channel of the Port of Buenaventura — the first major port on the Pacific before and after the Panama Canal, and the only port on Colombia’s Pacific coast.
