Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) general manager Jay Daniel Santiago met with port police on December 19 to ensure measures are in place for safe travel this holiday season.

Santiago warned port police violations will not be tolerated, noting that security is an area the agency pays daily attention to especially during peak season.

Aside from more than 200 port police officers with body-mounted cameras regularly deployed across PPA ports, the agency monitors ports 24/7 using closed circuit television cameras as part of its Port Surveillance System (PSS) located at the Manila head office.

PSS covers 52 ports under PPA jurisdiction with random viewing of the docks that may be operator-controlled to verify reports reaching PPA management and its other offices.

“Our CCTV monitoring is like our eyes when it comes to our ports. There we see the macro of the ports…,” said Diane Steffi Guillamon, head of the PPA Internal Security Affairs Staff.

To further ensure safety of travellers this holiday season, PPA has launched “Oplan Biyaheng Ayos” and the “no leave policy”.

More than 57 million passengers are expected use various ports this December, a 200% increase over the number of passengers recorded last year, according to PPA.
