Philippine ports’ cargo volumes down 1.66% in Jan-Sept

  • Philippine ports’ cargo throughput declined 1.66% in the first nine months of 2022, as exports dipped in double digits
  • Containers, ship calls, and passenger traffic grew 6.84%, 26%, and 181%, respectively

Philippine ports’ cargo volume declined 1.66% in the first nine months of 2022, as exports dipped in double digits, according to data from the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA).

Cargoes handled by ports under the PPA’s jurisdiction reached 196.81 million metric tons (MT) from January to September 2022, down from 200.14 million MT in the same period last year.

Of the total, foreign cargoes accounted for 61% while the rest were domestic cargoes.

Foreign cargoes decreased 5.86% in the first nine months of the year to 120.49 million MT from 127.99 million MT in the same period last year.

Import cargoes increased 3% to 72.28 million MT from 70.17 million MT, while exports dropped 16.62% to 48.21 million MT from 57.82 million MT.

Domestic cargoes, meanwhile, grew 5.78% to 76.32 million MT from 72.15 million MT.

In terms of containers, PPA saw a 6.84% growth in January to September 2022 to 5.87 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) from 5.49 million TEUs in the same period last year.

Foreign containers were up 7.11% to 3.59 million TEUs from 3.36 million TEUs. Domestic containers likewise increased 6.41% to 2.27 million TEUs from 2.13 million TEUs.

Imports reached 1.81 million TEUs, up 7.74% from 1.68 million TEUs. Exports also rose 6.48% to 1.78 million TEUs from 1.67 million TEUs.

Ship calls grew 26% to 346,369 vessels from 275,581 in the first nine months as domestic ship calls increased in double digits.

Domestic ship calls climbed 26.68% to 337,770 vessels in January to September 2022 from 266,635 vessels in the same period in 2021.

Foreign ship calls declined 3.88% to 8,599 vessels from 8,946.

Passenger traffic, meanwhile, improved with the relaxation of COVID-19-related protocols.

For the first nine months of the year, passenger volumes hit 43.23 million, a 181% surge from 15.41 million in the same period last year.

In 2021, PPA surpassed its cargo and container forecasts, recording 7.4% and 9.11% increases, respectively. Passenger traffic, however, declined 7.27%.
