Construction of the 3.17-kilometer Panguil Bay Bridge that will connect Tangub City in Misamis Occidental to the town of Tubod in Lanao del Norte is now 61% done and targeted for completion in December 2023, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said.

DPWH said in a statement said it is exerting efforts to accelerate the vast pipeline of activities for constructing the project’s superstructure.

The project contractor is a joint venture of South Korea’s Namkwang Engineering & Construction Corp., Kukdong Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd. and Gumgwang Construction Co. Ltd., while the consultant is a joint venture of Korea’s Yooshin Engineering Corp., Pyunghwa Engineering Consultants Ltd. and Kyong-Ho Engineering & Architects Co. Ltd.

The P7.38 billion bridge project is financed by a loan agreement between the Philippine government and the Korean Export-Import Bank.

The construction blitz started after the full completion of the 54 bored piling works to allow the start of construction of the 36 abutment and pier columns, 32 copings, and commence the incremental launching method (ILM) for the superstructure on both ends at Tubod and Tangub City.

DPWH said it has been continuously improving and expanding the capacities of the country’s road network by building inter-island bridges to meet increasing demands of the Philippine economy.

Bridging the geographical gap between Tubod and Tangub City/Ozamis City area, Panguil Bay Bridge will reduce travel time between Lanao del Norte and Misamis Occidental from two hours to just seven minutes.

Present connectivity between Ozamis City/Tangub City and Tubod via roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessels is 1.5 to 2.5 hours, including loading and unloading time, while overland travel over a distance of 100 km is takes 2 to 2.5 hours.

Construction work goes on round the clock with 336 workers deployed to complete the project by December 2023. DPWH said the construction work was affected this last quarter of 2022 by a climate in the project area that is often rainy with strong currents in Panguil Bay.

Officially started on February 2020, the design and build phase of Panguil Bay Bridge was pushed back by work restrictions at the height of the pandemic, as well as material/supply chain issues, additional design time and delays in the arrival and release of equipment from abroad.

The Panguil Bay Bridge Project consists of the main bridge (extra-dosed type) 320 meters long, a 1,920-meter-long approach bridge made of pre-stressed concrete girders, and an approach road.

The bridge will have a total length of 3.17 km and will be the longest span in Mindanao.

Once Panguil Bay Bridge is completed in 2023, it will replace the 2.16-km San Juanico Bridge that connects Samar and Leyte provinces in Eastern Visayas Region as the longest bridge in the Philippines.
