PAL to resume limited international, domestic flights from June

Philippine Airlines (PAL) will operate scheduled flights on selected international and domestic routes starting June 1 following the easing of community quarantines nationwide.

Limited international services that will restart operations on June 1 to 30 include the routes Canada (Vancouver, Toronto), Guam, Vietnam, mainland China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Taipei, Singapore, Japan, the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the USA (Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Honolulu).

PAL said it is still evaluating the possibility of operating selected services to London and Sydney in June.

The airline is holding off operating regular scheduled flights to and from the following international destinations for June: Auckland, Bali, Bangkok, Beijing, Brisbane, Busan, Fukuoka, Guangzhou, Hanoi, Macau, Melbourne, Phnom Penh, Perth, Port Moresby, Quanzhou (Jinjiang), Sapporo, Seoul (Incheon) and Shanghai.

PAL said it plans to increase the number of routes and flights in the coming months, if allowed by aviation authorities, global public health conditions and the travel environment.

National Capital Region, Regions II, III, IV-A, and the provinces of Pangasinan, Albay, and Davao will be under general community quarantine (GCQ) while the remaining areas in the country will transition to modified GCQ (MGCQ) starting June 1. These are less restricted forms of quarantine that allow public transportation on a limited capacity and subject to health and safety protocols.

As it resumes flights, PAL said it is strictly implementing Fly Safe “new normal” practices to protect its passengers and in compliance with international health and safety protocols.

“Our travelers deserve to know that they can fly safely and with confidence,” PAL president and chief operating officer Gilbert Santa Maria said in a separate statement.

He added: “PAL is taking every precaution to protect our passengers and our crew against bio-security risks, through safety measures, stronger practices and protocols, effective equipment and the specialized training and expertise of our crew members and all personnel. That’s what we are about: Safety is in our DNA, the cornerstone of all PAL operations, and the heart of our commitment to service.”

Passengers will be required to keep their face masks/coverings on during the flight, and observe hand hygiene practices.

The airline also encourages passengers to check in online and arrive early at the airport to allocate extra time for new safety procedures (thermal scanning, social distancing practices for queuing, etc.) – at least three hours prior to departure for domestic flights; and four hours prior to departure for international flights. They must also ensure that carry-on bags are limited to just 7 kilos (15 lbs), with maximum length of 56 cm (22 inches), width of 36 cm (14 inches) and height of 23 cm (9 inches).

Passengers will be served meals and beverages in secure packaging, to minimize close contact. Inflight meals are prepared following strict Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) procedures. Reading material will no longer be distributed during the flight.

The airline assured its aircraft are equipped with high-technology systems that continuously infuse fresh air across the cabin (cabin air is replaced every 2 to 3 minutes), as well as High Efficiency Particulate Arrestor (HEPA) filters that trap viruses, bacteria and other contaminants with 99.9% efficiency.

“The onboard air creates a cleaner environment that is safer than most enclosed public spaces and comparable to hospital operating rooms,” PAL noted.

PAL’s Boeing, Airbus and De Havilland aircraft undergo rigorous cabin disinfection using high-grade eco-friendly cleaning agents. From windows to seatback video screens, tray tables and seats, every surface is wiped clean by trained personnel before every flight. Crew members will continuously maintain the cleanliness of lavatories and cabin areas during every flight, PAL noted.

Check-in counters and ticket offices will be equipped with transparent barriers, while airport personnel will wear face masks, shields and gloves to protect all passengers.  Safety practices will be observed for boarding and deplaning, as well as at business class lounges and airport shuttle buses.

All pilots and cabin crew will undergo medical evaluation before their flight assignments. PAL said its cabin crew would undergo rapid antibody testing prior to the flight, and will be wearing full personal protective equipment on board the flight.

All personnel are trained to the appropriate health protocols and handling of unwell passengers.

PAL said it will continue to collaborate with the health authorities in the Philippines and at every overseas station, to ensure full adherence to safety protocols and globally accepted standards set by the International Air Transport Association, the International Civil Aviation Organization, the E.U. Aviation Safety Agency, and the World Health Organization.

“As we uphold the health and safety of our passengers and staff to mitigate the risk of infection, we seek the cooperation of our flying public. This must be a concerted effort,” Santa Maria said.
