  • The Toll Regulatory Board has approved a 2% to 3% toll increase on the North Luzon Expressway starting May 18, 2021
  • Depending on their vehicle class, motorists traveling end-to-end between Metro Manila and Mabalacat City, Pampanga will be charged an additional P6, P14, and P16, respectively
  • The increase is part of the approved periodic adjustments due in 2012 and 2014, which TRB and NLEX Corp. agreed to implement on a staggered basis to cushion the impact of the adjustment

The Toll Regulatory Board (TRB) has approved a 2% to 3% toll increase on North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) starting May 18, 2021.

The increase is part of approved periodic adjustments due in 2012 and 2014 that TRB and NLEX Corp. agreed to implement on a staggered basis to cushion the impact of the adjustments, NLEX Corp. said in a statement. It also follows a recent TRB review consistent with regulatory procedures recognizing the continuing investments of private sector operators, the statement added.

Taking effect past midnight or 12:01 am on May 18, the increase will be an additional P2 for Class 1 vehicles in the open system, value-added tax included. For the entire NLEX journey end-to-end, Class 1 vehicles will pay an additional P6.

The open system, where a flat rate is charged per entry, includes Quezon City, Caloocan City, Valenzuela City, Malabon City, Navotas City, Meycauayan City and Marilao, Bulacan.  On the other hand, the closed system is between Bocaue, Bulacan and Mabalacat City, Pampanga.

For other vehicle classes, the minimal increase within the open system will translate to an additional P3 for Class 2 (buses and small commercial trucks), and P4 for Class 3 (large trucks/trailers).

This means motorists traveling end-to-end between Metro Manila and Mabalacat City, Pampanga will be charged an additional P6, P14, and P16 respectively, depending on their vehicle class.

NLEX Corp. noted that despite the reduced road traffic due to lockdowns, it has continued its expressway improvement and maintenance.

“The company has also continued to provide quality infrastructure projects that stimulate business activities and overall economic recovery,” NLEX Corp. added.

Among the ongoing improvements are the regular pavement repair program, the urgent safety repairs along strategic bridges, and the radio frequency identification system enhancements. The company has recently completed the upgrade of roadway lights on a 33-kilometer (km) stretch between Bulacan and Pampanga.

NLEX is also undertaking within the year high-impact projects, such as the 8-km NLEX connector that will soon bring the daily NLEX commuters to España, Manila via the Harbor Link.

Also ongoing is the major upgrade of the 5-km Candaba Viaduct to maintain the bridge’s long-term serviceability and ensure the safety and comfort of motorists.

Last year, the company expanded the NLEX network in the CAMANAVA (Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela) area with the completion of the 2.6-km NLEX Harbor Link-Road 10 elevated section.

The elevated section features the new Caloocan Interchange with on and off ramps along Grace Park, the new Malabon Exit with an off ramp on Dagat-Dagatan Avenue, and the new Navotas Interchange. Since its opening, over 30,000 vehicles per day, mostly from the logistics industry, have used the new road and benefitted from improved travel times.
