  • NLEX Corp. president and general manager Luigi Bautista says the first two sections of the expressway are more than 90% done and should open by December
  • When completed, the 8-km connector road would serve 35,000 motorists

NLEx Connector, a skyway that links North Luzon Expressway (NLEx) in Caloocan City to Sta. Mesa, Manila, may be fully operational by April 2023, according to tollway operator NLEX Corp.

NLEx Corp. president and general manager Luigi Bautista at the sidelines of a recent event in Pasay said Metro Pacific Tollways Corp. (MPTC) has gone full blast in building the project.

With more than 90% of work done on the first two sections linking the Caloocan and España interchanges, the project “will be fully operational” by early second quarter of 2023, he said.

Bautista said the two sections are expected to open by December. When the project is completed, the eight-kilometer tollroad should serve 35,000 motorists daily, he added.

“This project augurs well for the transport industry as we expect trucks to have an easier access to trading centers in Central and Northern Luzon without having to squeeze through congested roads in Metro Manila,” Bautista said.

He said NLEX Corp., as a fully committed infrastructure development, project management and mobility services company, is continually seeking ways to speed up deliveries of goods and services and renew interest in domestic tourism.

Bautista also praised tollway developer MPTC’s digitalization of the tollroad operator’s systems and services.

“Beyond providing vital infrastructure for the unimpeded flow of goods and services and accessibility to and from nearby regions, the Metro Pacific Tollways Group has embarked on digital transformation of our operations and services,” Bautista said.

As a result, NLEX Corp. has been able to line up several technology-based projects and initiatives that will greatly benefit stakeholders, he said.

The tollway operator set aside P1.2 billion this year to upgrade its infrastructure and toll collection system, starting with replacing about 100 toll system equipment at its toll plazas in Balintawak, Karuhatan, Paso de Blas, Meycauayan, Marilao, Bocaue, Balagtas, Tabang, Sta. Rita, Pulilan, San Simon, San Fernando, Mexico and Angeles.

These equipment include toll fare indicators, lane status indicators, traffic control gates, automatic vehicle classification devices and loop detectors, said NLEX Corp.
