The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) inaugurated on July 8 the expanded Salomague port, groomed as one of the country’s cruise ports.
The development of the Cabugao, Ilocos Sur port included construction of reinforced concrete (RC) platform back-up areas and RC pier extension to 543 meters from 120 meters previously.
The project started in November 2019 and was officially completed on April 20, 2021.
The expansion of Salomague port is expected to promote local economic sufficiency as job opportunities, especially in the tourism sector, will be offered once the port becomes fully operational, DOTr said in a statement.
Strategically located near beaches and historical sites of Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur, Salomague port is being eyed as one of the country’s ports of call for cruise ships. It is also expected to increase cruise calls to the country, being near the ports of Hong Kong and South China.
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, several regional cruise operators have already included the Ilocos region in their regular rotations.
Aside from Salomague port, PPA has completed improvement of ports of Sta. Catalina and San Estaban, also in Ilocos Sur.
