The newly expanded Butuan Airport passenger terminal building was officially opened on March 8 by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP).

The P24.5-million development project completed on December 18, 2022 involved the expansion, rehabilitation, improvement, and beautification of the Principal Class 1 airport serving Butuan City and Agusan del Norte, CAAP said in a statement.

With its expansion, the airport can now accommodate a total of 616 passengers from the previous 248 passengers. The available space of the terminal has also been increased from 1,440 square meters to 2,016 sqm.

Speaking at the inauguration, CAAP director general Manuel Antonio Tamayo expressed optimism about the impact of the project on the community and the socio-economic growth of Butuan and Agusan del Norte, as well as Mindanao.

“As Butuan continues to progress, the DOTr [Department of Transportation], CAAP, together with the LGU [local government unit], worked with tremendous efforts to deliver this development with the aim of welcoming even more travelers and tourists to the city and in the surrounding Agusan del Norte Province,” Tamayo said.

“This is in line with the goal to provide locals and tourists with safer journeys to different parts of the country.”

Butuan Airport caters to 12 Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines flights daily, with its 2.1-kilometer runway capable of accommodating the 179-seater Airbus 320/321. The runway was rehabilitated and inaugurated in 2021.
