NAIA, Cebu airport turn in mixed cargo performance in 2022

The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) turned in mixed cargo performance in 2022, data from the two main gateways’ regulators showed.

Cargo handled by NAIA declined slightly by 0.9% while volume at MCIA rose 2.8% in 2022 with both airports recording declines in foreign cargoes.

NAIA last year handled 583,308.46 metric tons (MT) of cargo, slightly lower than the 588,370.92 MT posted in 2021, according to operational statistics from the website of Manila International Airport Authority.

International cargoes, which account for 69% of the total, were 5% down to 402,732.26 MT from 424,577.3 MT in 2021.

Domestic cargoes, on the other hand, grew 10.2% to 180,576.2 MT from 163,793.62 MT.

Cargoes handled by MCIA increased to 56.60 million kilograms (kg) in 2022 from 55.06 million kg in 2021, according to data from Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority.

Domestic cargoes made up 57% or 32.1 million kg of the total and were 5.5% heavier than the 30.43 million kg recorded in 2021.

International cargoes, on another note, slipped 0.5% to 24.50 million kg from 24.63 million kg.

In the first two months of 2023, both gateways saw international cargoes drop while domestic cargoes improved.

For January-February 2023, NAIA recorded 87,360.1 MT of cargoes, a 5.1% dip from 92,037.11 MT in the same period last year.

International cargoes dropped 13% to 55,296.61 MT from 63,658 MT while domestic cargoes increased 13% to 32,063.49 MT from 28,379.11 MT.

MCIA likewise recorded a 3% drop in cargoes to 8.86 million kg in January-February 2023, from 9.14 million kg in the same period in 2022.

International cargoes fell 33% to 2.90 million kg from 4.36 million kg while domestic cargoes grew 25% to 5.96 million kg from 4.78 million kg.

Flights in NAIA increased 135.4% in 2022 to 213,317 from 90,626 in 2021 while passenger traffic surged 295.5% to 30.91 million from just 7.82 million in 2021.

In the first quarter of 2023, NAIA serviced 10.86 million passengers, a 158% jump from the 4.20 million passengers in the same quarter last year. Flight movements in the first quarter of 2023 rose 77% to 67,781 from 38,269 in the first quarter of 2022.

At MCIA, flight movements in 2022 soared 209% to 54,997 from 17,797 in 2021 while passenger traffic skyrocketed 318% to 5.56 million from 1.33 million in 2021.

In the first two months of 2023, flight movements shot up 230% to 13,598 from 4,115 in the same period last year. Passenger traffic likewise improved 321% to 1.49 million from 354,420 in January to February 2022. – Roumina Pablo
