The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has bared the alternative routes vehicles can take as the Marcos Highway Bridge in Marikina City is set to go through an eight-month rehabilitation starting May 11.

MMDA general manager Jose Arturo Garcia announced that the eastbound portion of the bridge is to be closed first starting 11 p.m. of May 11 until the next four months. Private contractors of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will work on the other direction after four months, Garcia said.

The rehabilitation was earlier scheduled on May 4, but was moved because the private contractors were not yet ready. Private contractors have yet to open an intersection for trucks traversing the area; install traffic signal for trucks from Libis going to Katipunan in Quezon City; open a slot at the median island for eastbound vehicular traffic or vehicles from Cubao to Antipolo and install all signage informing the public of the project.

Garcia said the bridge’s rehabilitation is long overdue, as private contractors have been requesting for the schedule of the repair since last year.

Vehicles going to Antipolo can take the westbound direction while vehicles to Cubao in Quezon City can use the service road in front of SM Marikina Mall.

With the rehabilitation, MMDA decided to adjust the truck ban hours to 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. from the existing 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.

To guide motorists, signage has already been installed along Marcos Highway. At least 3,000 vehicles traverse the road every hour.
