Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Danilo Lim passed away on January 6, Malacañang confirmed in a statement.

Lim died before 8 a.m. on January 6 at the age of 65, presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said in a statement.

He died of cardiac arrest. On Dec. 29, Lim announced he had contracted the coronavirus and immediately went on quarantine.

“MMDA Chair Lim served the Duterte administration with professionalism, competence and integrity. He would be dearly missed,” Roque said.

The cause of death was not disclosed. Last December 29, Lim announced he tested positive for the coronavirus disease after a routine screening as a frontliner.

Lim was a retired military brigadier general and was a member of the Philippine Military Academy Makatarungan Class 1978.

He led the failed coup d’etat against former President Corazon Aquino in 1989 and was detained for two years until he was granted amnesty by former President Fidel V. Ramos.

He was also involved in the 2006 plot to oust former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, and was detained from 2006 to 2010 on charges of rebellion and attempted coup d’ etat.

He ran for a Senate seat in 2010 but lost.

He then served as deputy commissioner for intelligence of the Bureau of Customs during the time of former President Benigno Aquino III but resigned in 2013 due to “powerful forces” which he said affected his mandate to capture smugglers and institute reforms in the bureau.

In 2017, Lim was appointed chairman of MMDA.

Updated on Jan 7, at 1:08PM, to include cause of death.
